Facility Operators are responsible for the overall maintenance of recreation facilities. Amenities such as pools, arenas, multipurpose rooms, are maintained by the various positions under Facility Operations.

Arena Maintenance Worker

Reporting to the Community Recreation Manager, Arena Maintenance Workers will be responsible in this unionized position for operating ice-making and resurfacing equipment in the production and maintenance of arena and/or curling ice.

Typical Job Responsibilities

  • Monitor refrigeration equipment, including taking and recording readings and reporting issues
  • Checking, adjusting and performing routine repairs and maintenance tasks on equipment and ensuring ice quality is maintained
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled building maintenance and minor repair tasks
  • Routine janitorial duties such as cleaning public areas, washrooms and change rooms
  • Carry out security checks

Building Service Worker (BSW)

Building Service Workers will be responsible to set up rooms for rental groups, perform minor maintenance, and operate cleaning machinery as required. BSW’s will perform the following janitorial and custodial tasks:

  • Wash hand basins, sinks, toilets, and tile work and replenish supplies in washrooms

Facility and Pool Operations Supervisor

Reporting to the Facilities Operations and Maintenance Superintendent in this unionized position, you will perform a variety of skilled supervisory and technical work relating to multi-use recreation facilities. As the Facility and Pool Operations Supervisor you will be responsible for ensuring that the facility is kept clean to the highest standards at all times. In addition, as a pool operator, you will ensure all preventative maintenance and cleaning procedures are performed on a timely basis, for both indoor aquatics centre and the outdoor pool. This is a hands-on position.

Typical Job Responsibilities

  • Plan, assign, schedule, coordinate and review the work of other employees involved in recreation facility and equipment maintenance, janitorial and custodial work, pool maintenance, refrigeration and ice-making, aquatic facilities, waterparks, ice arenas, curling rinks, fitness and community centres
  • Train new employees in work safe standards and methods
  • Schedule and coordinate maintenance, janitorial/custodial services for a range of public facilities to ensure the operational requirements are met and to identify signs of required maintenance or deterioration

Utility Maintenance Worker (UMW)

Utility Maintenance Workers are responsible for maintaining building standards and monitoring building security and safety, the UMW is responsible for a variety of functions related to the operation and service of swimming pools, pool chemical controllers, pumps, filtration and related equipment, in addition to performing routine to skilled maintenance, repair and cleaning of pools and community/recreation facilities. Ensures efficient facility operation by directing and assisting maintenance staff in mechanical, technical and custodial duties.

This employee is responsible for the maintenance of ice-making equipment, swimming pool filtering equipment, pool chemical treatment, heating plants, ultra violet generators and computerized energy management systems. Incumbent also plays a key role in the training and development of staff.
